February is Social is Social Species Month

Meet some of our most social animals: the kusimanse (dwarf mongoose), pancake tortoise, alpaca, and Patagonian mara.

  • Dwarf mongooses are tiny, highly social carnivores that live in cooperative groups, grooming one another, sharing burrows, and standing sentry to warn of predators.

  • Pancake tortoises may seem solitary, but their flattened shells let them squeeze into crevices for communal shelter; they’re calm and approachable, often seen basking together on sun-warmed rocks.

  • Alpacas are gentle herd animals prized for their curious, friendly nature and strong social bonds; they communicate with soft humming and rely on group cohesion for comfort.

  • Patagonian mara is large, long-legged rodent that forms monogamous pairs and live in social colonies, grazing together across open habitats and using communal burrows.

Each species showcases a different style of social life—cooperative teamwork, shared sheltering, herd companionship, and pair-bonded community—offering a fascinating glimpse into animal sociability.
