Volunteer

Volunteers must be 18 years old or older.

We encourage volunteers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 with current boosters.

Volunteer opportunities

Weekday Reptile and Amphibian Care: Taking care of the reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, including feeding, cleaning enclosures, water changes, and other assignments directed by the reptile and amphibian curator. This position requires a weekly commitment. Hours for volunteering are 1-4 or 5-7pm Monday - Friday. We do not currently need help with reptiles and amphibians on the weekends. Prior experience with reptiles or amphibians is required. 

AM/PM Feeder: Taking care of the birds and mammals, including diet preparation, food delivery, enclosure cleaning and maintenance, and other tasks assigned by the zookeepers or curators. Kitchen support tasks such as washing dishes, sweeping, cleaning, composting, and taking out trash and recycling are also included. Work is inside and out, regardless of weather. This position requires a weekly commitment. Hours for volunteering are 9am - 1 pm or 5-7pm, seven days a week.

Docent: Help prepare the facility for weekend open hours. Provide educational information to the public about our animals and facilities during open hours. Speak with a wide range of people from young children to seniors. Must be available two weekend days per month from 11:30am-2:30pm or 2:30-5:30pm (or an all day shift). Docents are cross-trained to work in the gift shop and one shift every two months must be in the gift shop.

Gift Shop Attendant/Greeter: Must be available one weekend day per month from 11:30am-2:30pm or 2:30-5:30pm (or an all day shift). Responsibilities include: greeting visitors, answering basic questions, merchandise sales, and maintenance of displays.

Fireside Craft or Small Animal Assistant: Must be available one weekend day per month from 11:30am-2:30pm or 2:30-5:30pm (or an all day shift). Responsibilities include: assisting with childrens’ crafts/activities and/or managing small animals.

Horticulturist: We need helpers to organize, maintain, and propagate plants such as palms, bamboos, and bananas for our displays. Put your green thumb to good use with us!

Construction & Facilities: We like our creatures to have all the comforts of home--as much of their natural habitat as we can provide, plus enrichment features. If you are handy with a hammer and power tools, we need you! Frequency and time requirements vary with each project.

Professional Support: Are you a lawyer, accountant, or tech wizard? We can use your volunteer help from time to time with various projects. We’d love to hear from you if you are interested in helping us out.
